Dementia Care

A. Behavioural Care Series (2 days)

Day #1 - Preventing Aggression

  • The controlling approach - positioning, dominant side, control tactics
  • Assessing behaviour determining patterns - the 24 Hour Profile

Day #2 - Managing Challenging Behaviours

  • The uniqueness of the client - vulnerability, biological changes and the experience
  • The premise for behaviour management
  • The rational behind the behaviour - sexually expressive behaviour, chronic wandering, rummaging/hoarding & repetitive behaviours
  • Techniques to resolve challenging behaviours
  • Assessment techniques - including assessment focus, care analysis, uncovering diversional tactics, programming evaluation, ADL assessment, etc
  • Programming strategies

B.  Alternative Dementia Strategies Program (2 days):

Day #1

  • Define programming as alternative dementia strategy
  • Examine the value and impact of programming
  • Recognize who is responsible & needs to be involved in programming
  • Discover residual resident skills, interests & abilities amidst the losses
  • Take inventory – personal skills/abilities & organizational equipment/materials
  • Programming together – shared recipes, music, tasks, etc.

Day #2

  • Encourage team approach to programming
  • Develop facility-wide support and involvement
  • Outline practical aspects with variety of activities, times
  • Maximize functionality, divert behaviours & minimize risk from behaviours
  • Learn themed programs & measurement tools illustrating successful interventions

C.  Behaviour Management Specialist Program (10days):Caring for the Dementia Client

The FCS International Behaviour Management Specialist Program is divided into three parts:

Part One - Pre-Work

The following materials are provided to participants in advance of the training series:

  • Text - "Dancing with Dementia: Behavioural Care through Supportive Therapy"
  • Text - "Getting Staff Excited: The Role of the Nurse Manager in LTC"
  • Preparation Material booklet - containing all related materials, assessment tools, documentation and forms

Part Two - Educational Series

The training program consists of two training modules:

  • A six day training program on Behavioural Care and Behaviour Management
  • A three day training program on Case Reviews, Leadership Skills and Programming Implementation

Part Three - Clinical Practicum

The Clinical Practicum requires trainees to conduct an assessment of their own organization and participate in a one-day assessment of an alternate organization.

Participants successfully completing the program will receive a certificate and Behaviour Management Specialist pin. They will be recognized as the Behaviour Management Specialist within their facility.

Recommended for all designations of staff.


 

Grief Managment Program

Day #1: The Grief Management Program

  • Understanding the Frail Elderly Experience - a time of loss

  • Assessing needs & creating a supportive care process

  • Empowerment strategies to become an effective Client Advocate

Med Tech Training (3 Days)

  • Diabetes And Administration Of Insulin

Day Three:

  • End of training practicum and test
