Dr. Michael J. Dufresne

Education:

  • Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Alberta
  • B.Sc. from York University, Toronto, ON

Previous Work Experience:

  • Appointed Research Coordinator for Cancer Care Ontario, Region South
  • Research member of the Barbara Karmanos Cancer Institute
  • Biological Sciences at the University of Windsor
  • University of Western Ontario as an MRC post-doctoral fellow
  • Served on numerous regional, provincial and national committees/task forces, including:
    • Cancer Care Ontario's Research Advisory Committee
    • Expert Task Force on Occupational and Environmental Cancer
    • Regional CCO Prevention and Regional Cancer Advisory Committees
  • Past member of a number of executive committees and boards including:
    • The Executive Committee at Brentwood, a recovery centre for addicted persons
    • The Hospice of Windsor and Essex County, as chair of the Committee on Education, Supportive and Palliative Care

Research Focus:

Dr. Dufresne's research has focused on two general areas: the cellular/molecular mechanisms underlying the cancer-causing effects of environmental pollutants and the role of protein degrading enzymes during development and tumour progression. This research has been funded by federal and international agencies including the National Cancer Institutes of Canada and the United States, the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Canada, the National Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada, Cancer Care Ontario and the National Institute of Health (U.S.A.).
